Alex Jennings; photographer, lensman, image-maker, someone who takes photographs as a professional or as an artist; meaning to“draw with light”.

Born in Australia and raised in the UK. Alex from a young age was interested in anything visual from clothing, art, photography, and the moving image. Returning to Australia in his early 20’s, after acquiring a Degree in Graphic Design and Fine Arts, he eventually started shooting for himself after assisting photographers in New York and Australia.

Alex’s enthusiasm for collecting and collating, has drawn him to collage and montage of images, that tell a story or interpret a creative idea. Passionate about shooting film and printing his own work, this is inspiring as most people have abandoned the analogue process. The darkroom is where the image comes alive. Via necessity he regularly shoots digital for commissions.

Exploring the streets with Alex is fascinating. Whether it’s discovering discarded; shopping lists, letters, tickets, and receipts, these are stored for future use in his work, as he loves ephemera. This is reflected with his ongoing series of scrap books, which are beautifully produced and curated.

Having participated in many group and solo exhibitions, Alex was announced as a finalist in The Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize. He is constantly challenging the concept of art, painting and ephemera on canvas and presenting photographs in an exciting way.

Inspired by the great Masters of Photography; Irving Penn, Richard Avedon to Peter Beard, his work is timeless. Creating something extra special that makes his portraits stand out. The slight turn of a hand, the gesture of an eye, the body language of the sitter is all well considered.

Regularly commissioned by leading publications including Harper’s Bazaar, News Limited, Financial Times and In-Style. He has also shot major campaigns for Tigerlily, Nike, Holiday Inn, and Vodafone. He often collaborates with art directors and is frequently asked to direct these commissions alone.

Over the past years, Alex is concentrating on personal commissions for clients. Producing art works, a collaboration to create something rather unique, but nothing ‘Naff’ as he likes to say.

This website is a good indication, into Mr Jennings’ psyche.
